dMC: Converting Files

The process of converting files from one format to another is called transcoding, generally speaking it is not a good idea to transcode from lossy to lossy format (mp3, wma, ogg are lossy formats) as quality is lost after each conversion. Having said that, if there is a good reason to convert such as the audio format is not supported in a player, or you wish to use a lower bit rate (creating a smaller file, of a lower audio quality) then by all means transcode, if you have the option though re-rip from the original CD. One last point, if a 128Kbps mp3 file is converted to a 192Kbps mp3, the 192Kbps file is not of any higher quality - once quality is lost, it is gone forever.

There are three ways to convert files: with Explorer, using Simple File Selector, or through dMC File Selector:

  Converting with Explorer

Perhaps the simplest way of converting, right click on My Computer and select Explore:

Now find the folder where your audio files reside:

right click on one or more (press CTRL + A to select all the files) of the files and select Convert To:

and dMCs conversion page is displayed:

The destination audio format is shown at the top (Mp3 (Lame) in the example), click the down arrow to select a different audio format, extra compression Codecs can be installed from [Codec Central]. Just below this section are the compression settings for the selected audio format, each one is different - refer to Start >> Programs >> dBpowerAMP Music Converter >> Help >> Codecs for details on each Codec.

Output To governs where the converted file(s) are stored, Same Folder as Original (option to overwrite, or rename existing if converting from and to same format) or a Folder or your choosing. Clicking Rename Files shows the final filenames and allows the renaming of individual files (select a file and press F2),  Power Pack allows individual files to be excluded, useful when converting Playlists of files.

Click Convert >> to begin the conversion.

  Simple File Selector
Found in Start >> Programs >> dBpowerAMP Music Converter is dBpowerAMP Music Converter, when run a traditional Open File selection window is shown, use this to select audio file(s) to convert from - multiple files can be selected by holding down the CTRL key whilst clicking files.

A useful feature of  Simple File Selector is Files of Type drop list box, clicked this to view all the file types dMC is able to convert.

  dMC File Selector
dMC File Selector is an optional (free) install for dMC, it allows the quick and easy selection of whole drives, folders and sub-folders for conversion with one click, as well as excluding file types. Download [dMC File Selector].

Options

Volume Normalize - perfect when creating an audio CD from unrelated tracks, there is nothing worse than having to constantly adjust the volume of your car CD player whilst driving along (not to mention dangerous too). Volume Normalize increases the volume of quiet tracks, so they all sound the same.

users get a DSP Effects button instead  (including a more advanced version of Volume Normalize). DSP effects include Karaoke, Volume Fade in & out, Silence Trim and Sound Grabber (to grab a portion of sound from original).

Preserve ID Tags - additional track information, such as Artist and Track are often embedded in ID Tags. If this information is present, it can be passed onto the new converted files. Note not all audio formats support ID Tags.

Delete Source File(s) After Conversion - Care should be taken when using this option, if ticked all source files (files converting from) are deleted after conversion.

Add to dBpowerAMP Music Collection - for those lucky enough to have dBpowerAMP Audio Player (dAP) (a free download here), this option when checked adds newly converted files to dBpowerAMP's Music Collection. dBpowerAMP Audio Player

Explorer Popups

dMC installs a very useful function in Windows Explorer, hold the mouse over a supported audio file (such as mp3), and a yellow info popup displays details on that mp3 file, such as bitrate, ID Tags and length. The same goes for playlist files. Information displayed can be configured, or switched off in dMC Configuration.

Installing a New Codec

Codecs add extra encoding (writing, compression), or decoding (reading, decompression) abilities to dMC, download Codecs from [Codec Central].

  Power Pack Enhancements

Right click on a supported audio file in explorer, and as well as Convert To there is Edit Tag:

Also in Windows NT / 2000 / XP  right click on a file >> Properties >> ID Tag.

After typing a tag item press down arrow on the keyboard to move to the next field, when finished press enter. Multiple files can be tagged all at once, so for example - select 10 files in explorer, right click on one >> Edit Tag, then change only the fields that should be set for all the files, such as Artist, a tag value left as [Different] will remain untouched.

dMC Conversion Settings

Pressing Power Pack on dMC options page, or selecting Audio CD Input >> Power >> dMC Power Pack Options:

Temporary Path used with a DSP effect (such as volume normalize), the audio file is uncompressed and the effect applied.

The following options from Shut Down and down (below the line) are unique per codec - that is setting for mp3 (Lame) is independent to Wave:

At the end of conversions, your computer can be instructed to Shut Down, or Log-Off, for a one time shutdown see Priority below.

Before and After a batch of conversions are started a program can be run (optionally waiting for it to end) with Start of All Conversions Run and After All Conversions End Run. A more useful option is After Each Conversion Run, after each file has been compressed a program can be run, for example:  "C:\A Folder\A Program.exe" [OutFile]            where [OutFile] is the filename after conversion (long path name, with spaces - ie C:\A Mp3 File.mp3), or you can pass [OutFileShort] for the short name (ie C:\Amp3~1.mp3 some command line programs do not like possible spaces in the filename).   Before Each Conversion Run it is possible to pass [InFile] or  [InFileShort].

Whilst a conversion is taking place there is Priority option       how much time Windows gives to dMC in relation to other programs, in addition there is a priority option to Pause conversion, or a one time After Conversion option to shutdown the computer. Back to priority, be careful when setting High priorities, you might find your computer becomes very unresponsive, I tend to always use Below Normal, this allows me to continue to use other programs whilst converting.

Whilst converting, it is possible to change the appearance of the percentage bar with 'fun bars', many styles are available.

More Options Online

In [Codec Central] are two Power Pack Codecs, well they are not codecs as such rather useful Action performing Codecs, first there is Tag from Filename: if your audio files do not contain ID tags, but the information is present in the filename (such as Artist, Album & Title) then this Codec will tag. Arrange Music can take properly tagged files and rename the files and arrange them (if required) in nice Artist + Album folders.
